RSVP or RIP?

Somewhere out there, there are linguists overflowing with ideas and energy.

Somewhere out there, there are linguists who would love to have funds to spend on language-related issues.

Somewhere out there, there are linguists who welcome opportunities to network with their fellows.

ARE THEY IN THE WEST MIDLANDS?

West Midlands Society needs a new committee – otherwise the Society will be in abeyance. If you identify with the above and care enough about the regional Societies to devote a little of your time to one of them, please come forward and notify Stephen Eden at Saxon House.

West Midlands Society has served the Institute since 1985 – we need your ‘RSVP’ otherwise it will be ‘RIP’.

About Us

The West Midlands Regional Society is a geographical grouping of linguists from all walks of life. Active membership is drawn from approximately 300 Institute of Linguists members in the area, mainly from the West Midlands county and the surrounding postal areas. The committee sends regular mailings informing members of forthcoming events. Generally, there are four or five events a year, with the Annual General Meeting in September. Most of our meetings are held in central Birmingham. We aim to provide events covering a variety of subjects. We also meet once per year for dinner and some social meetings for speaking languages.

Dr Christina Schaeffner

News/Reports

On 29th June, Dr. Lesley Currah gave us a talk entitled "An onion specialist breaks the language barrier". Dr. Currah is a professional horticulturalist as well as a Member of the Institute. With obvious enthusiasm, she took us through her career so far, working with her twin loves of onion cultivation and language learning. After graduation from Wye College, her research and consultancy work has taken her to, among other places, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Texas, Nepal and Brazil, involving the acquisition of proficiency in the local languages. The theme which Dr. Currah's career illustrates clearly is that learning languages should not be regarded as merely an adjunct to a "proper" career, but as a source of fulfillment in itself.
