Becoming a member

IoL Membership

The Institute is the only UK-based body serving all professional linguists, whatever their country of residence or specialisms. Membership of the IoL allows you access to a range of exciting benefits from the Code of Conduct to discounts on several products/services.

Download a copy of the Application form (PDF, 43kb) and Notes & Instructions (PDF, 40kb) on how to complete your membership form. Alternatively, you can request the required Membership forms from the Membership Department, by post or fax: +44 (0) 20 7940 3128.

If you are working as a freelance translator, interpreter or tutor please remember to provide a detailed account of your work. This should include details of the nature of the work carried out, clients, frequency, subject matter, length, number of hours/words per week etc. as appropriate.

Consider your choice of referees carefully, especially if you are applying for admission in more than one language. Your referees should be people of professional standing, who are in a position to comment on your linguistic ability in a professional context.

The subscription year commences on 01 September. Applications are considered six times per year and membership is effective from the date of admission. Current subscription rates for admission are as follows:

Code of Professional Conduct

The Institute’s Council has approved (17 November 2007) the new Code of Professional Conduct shown here, with effect from 1 January 2008. The Code will apply to members of the Chartered Institute, and also to Chartered Linguists and to Registrants on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) whether or not they are members of the Chartered Institute.
 
The Code of Professional Conduct is supported by disciplinary procedures applicable to members of the Chartered Institute, Chartered Linguists and Registrants on NRPSI. The disciplinary procedures were approved by the Council on 17 November and will be available on this website as soon as possible.
