Yiddish
Speaker: Professor Yaron Matras, University of Manchester
Yiddish is a nonterritorial language spoken by Jews. It is grouped as a West-Gemanic language together with e.g. English, German and Dutch. Much of the grammar of the language has characteristic Germanic features, although a lot of vocabulary has been adopted from Slavic in the Eastern dialects. Unlike other Germanic languages, Yiddish uses Hebrew script.
