The Chartered Institute of Linguists is pleased to offer a range of one-day continuing professional development (CPD) workshops for linguists covering various professions, levels and areas of specialism. The majority of workshops are non-language specific and do not carry any pre-requisite other than a fluent level of English and the other language(s), both spoken and written.

Delegates receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of each workshop which is valid for their Continuing Professional Development record and delegates are also provided with comprehensive workshop packs as well as lists of resources.

To register for any workshop, simply fill in the Registration Card and return to us via email for processing. Payments can be made by cheque, postal order and debit or credit card and are due in full prior to workshop attendance. Please indicate method of payment on the Registration Card.

Working Effectively Across Cultures with International Contacts and Clients This one-off event, very kindly sponsored by our Business, Professions and Government Division, is to be run by Linguarama in conjunction with CIOL. Financial Management for Translators Workshop In response to your suggestions, we have teamed up with trusted trainer Karen Stokes to present a new workshop aimed at freelance translators in the early stages of setting up their business or looking to improve their financial management as their business expands. The key objectives of this workshop are to teach you how to manage your business more efficiently; keep clear business records; analyse the costs of running a translation business; calculate a profitable pricing structure; produce a cash-flow forecast; negotiate effectively; keep track of credit control and recover bad debt. Medical Interpreting Workshop: Sexual health and Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) Ever felt uncomfortable when interpreting very intimate health issues? Ever lacked the specialised terminology? Amniocentesis, dysuria or PCOS – these are three of many terms that you might be required to interpret when being on an assignment in a GUM or family planning clinic. Interpreting for the Police – Professional Conduct and Procedures This workshop is aimed at those interpreters wishing to learn more about working for the police, in particular at those who those who have passed Met Test or DPSI recently, but lack professional experience. This workshop will give interpreters the opportunity to develop and apply the terminology, values and skills required of interpreters working for the police. Becoming a Professional Business Interpreter Business interpreting is undertaken by both conference and public service interpreters in different contexts. It often involves very technical topics and requires good skills and a sound knowledge of the techniques involved. Business Interpreters will, by the nature of the job, have very close client contact and cannot afford “to get it wrong”. This workshop will look at how to become a professional business interpreter; outlining the types of work undertaken, the technology used, preparing for an assignment and looking for work. Participants who have completed this workshop will have become confident business interpreters who use the correct terminology, know what is expected of them as a professional and can advise and guide their future clients looking to fulfil their interpreting requirements to ensure perfect working conditions. Ethics for Interpreters Workshop Ever wondered how to deal with an ethically problematic interpreting dilemma whilst still showing your client that you are a human being with feelings too? Every felt uncomfortable or even unsafe during an interpreting assignment? If so, then this is the workshop for you. This workshop will look at different types of Codes of Ethics for professional interpreters in an interactive way. Ethics will be “de-coded” using real-life examples and giving participants some useful ideas on how to deal with ethically difficult situations. Brazilian Law: Civil Procedure Ana Luiza Iaria runs this course in which language-specific workshop will provide delegates with a deeper understanding of Civil Procedure in Brazil, and will teach valuable techniques with which to successfully translate in this field, between Brazilian Portuguese and English. Diploma in Translation Preparation (Summer) Part 1 This brand new workshop from Karen Stokes is aimed at DipTrans (IoLET Diploma in Translation) candidates intending to sit the examination in January 2013, in particular those candidates preparing for the examination through self-guided study. By the end of the two-day workshop, delegates will have gained an understanding of: the background to the DipTrans, its structure and the resources available; the knowledge and skills required to pass the examination; selecting and using paper-based and online resources and creating personal glossaries; strategies for selecting semi-specialised options; time management in the examination; the use of translator’s notes; DipTrans assessment criteria and marking scheme; potential pitfalls. The course will combine direct trainer input, group discussion, paired work, examination practice* and a self- or peer-assessment exercise (depending on language combinations). Delegates will be asked to provide their language combination in advance and translate an extract (~350 words) from a past paper during the examination practice session on day 2, for use in the self- or peer-assessment exercise. Brazilian Law: Criminal Law in Brazil The second in this series led by Ana Luiza Iaria, this workshop will provide delegates with a deeper understanding of Criminal Law in Brazil, and will teach valuable techniques with which to successfully translate in this field, between Brazilian Portuguese and English. Working with memoQ In the last few years, memoQ has established itself as a bona-fide and powerful CAT. A powerful and yet simple to use tool, it streamlines the translation process and makes easy to use reference material in almost any file format available. This is a beginner’s workshop where delegates will learn the basics of creating a project and configuring the software to suit their needs. Features to be discussed are creating a project, importing and filtering documents, creating TMs and termbases and managing them. Delegates will be asked to bring their own laptops, with memoQ installed. The trial version is functional for 45 days. A second advanced workshop will be run later in the year. Ana Luiza Iaria is a former lawyer and has been translating for over 20 years. Always interested in technology, she has been using computers for more than 30 years, since the olden days of “command line”. Medical Interpreting Workshop: Procedures and Accident & Emergency This fifth and final specialist medical interpreting workshop from Elizabeth Lake will first cover hospital procedures, such as work on diagnoses and symptoms terminology as well as theory on medical history taking. Medical Interpreting Workshop: Introduction to Medical Interpreting Elizabeth Lake delivers this workshop which is aimed at all interpreters wishing to learn more about interpreting for hospitals, GPs and other medical settings. The workshop will focus on the knowledge, skills and professional conduct in the field of medical interpreting. Interpreters will have a chance to enhance their interpreting skills, increase their knowledge of the healthcare system in the UK, and learn how to work in various medical settings. Metropolitan Police Test Revision Workshop (Summer) Part 1 Led by Antonia Coleman, this workshop is for interpreters preparing to sit the Metropolitan Police Test for the first time or as a re-sit candidate. It is also relevant for those interpreters interested in learning more about interpreting for the Police. Candidates have an opportunity to revise Simultaneous Interpreting during the morning session. The afternoon session covers Technical Translation. Please note that the last hour of Technical Translation session takes place under assessment conditions and delegates are given two texts to translate into their other language. There is an option to receive language specific feedback on the produced translation for the above stated fee. Candidates have to bear in mind that the feedback is not an indication whether they would pass or fail the assessment. Candidates need to apply for feedback at least 15 days before the workshop is due to be held. Candidates are invited to attend either a half-day session or the whole day. Medical Interpreting Workshop: Drugs A fourth specialist medical workshop from Elizabeth Lake, covering all you need to know about working as a Medical or Legal Interpreter in an environment in which drugs play a major part of the context. Translating Business Film Material As they strive to keep up with globalisation and rapid technological change (from video tape to CD, DVD, Internet use, iPhones, iPads), businesses constantly increase their use of film to advertise, communicate information or train staff. Our Trainers

Antonia Coleman is a professional freelance interpreter who has over ten years’ experience working for the Metropolitan Police, in Magistrates’ and Crown Courts, as a conference interpreter for the EU and on the freelance market. She holds the DPSI in English Law in Italian and French in addition to the Met Test, and has diplomas in both EU Law and Conference Interpreting and Translation. She also lectures at several universities.

Ana Luiza Iaria (MSc, FCIL, MITI, CL (Translator), ATA member) is a former lawyer who practiced Law for many years in Brazil before starting out as a translator. As well as a Law degree, she also holds a first degree in Languages and an MSc in Translation and Translation Technology; and teaches several subjects, including Publishing Skills, at the MSc in Translation at Imperial College London as a Visiting Lecturer. Apart from presenting papers on legal translation at international conferences, she also presents workshops on tools and productivity for translators.

Kirsty Heimerl-Moggan: Conference and Public Service Interpreter, Senior Lecturer & Course Leader MA Interpreting, University of Central Lancashire and Director of Interp-Right Training Consultancy Ltd.

Elizabeth Lake is an experienced public services interpreter, freelance translator and private languages tutor (French, German, Italian and Spanish). She is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL), holds the DPSI in Health (Italian) and has a BA Honours degree in German and Linguistics with Spanish from the University of East Anglia.

Dr Jean-Pierre Mailhac trains professional translators and postgraduate students in various European countries, and carries out research in applied translation studies. He has run a number of workshops as part of international conferences and for organisations such as the EU, the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, the CIOL, the Société Française des Traducteurs, the Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer and the Irish Translators’ and Interpreters’ Association.

Summer Mouallem is Subject Leader and Senior Lecturer in Arabic and Interpreting and Translation at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) where she designed a 4-year degree course for ab-initio Arabic. She is also a freelance interpreter, translator, trainer and consultant, a member of CIOL and is NRPSI-registered. She holds an MA in Translation and Interpreting in addition to two DPSIs (Diploma in Public Services Interpreting / Law and Health) and a Diploma in Translation. Her specialisms are legal and medical translation and interpreting as well as politics. Summer has given many talks on cultural issues related to the Middle East.

Karen Stokes is a professional freelance translator and visiting university lecturer in translation. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, member (MITI) of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and a Chartered Linguist (Translator). She holds an MA from the University of Oxford, the Diploma in Translation and an MA in Legal Translation from City University, London. She has a particular interest in professional development for translators and promoting good business practices amongst freelance practitioners.

Olga Vital is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL) and holds a Postgraduate Certificate for Interpreter Trainers from Middlesex University. She has also attained the DPSI in English Law (French), is registered with NRPSI and has a BA Honours degree in Business and Spanish from London Guildhall University. She works at the CIOL as Examinations Supervisor for the Certificate in Bilingual Skills and DPSI.
